Stefano Gallery is the home of original artwork by London-based contemporary artist Stefano.
My work is rooted in portraiture, memory, identity and human emotion. I work primarily with mixed media, combining paint, drawing, collage, texture and expressive mark-making to create images that sit somewhere between realism and abstraction.
Iām interested in the point where an image begins to break apart ā where a face, a memory or a familiar symbol becomes partially obscured, scratched away or rebuilt through layers of paint. The finished work often carries a sense of both presence and disappearance.
Much of my recent practice explores nostalgia, popular culture and the visual language of vintage advertising. Familiar imagery, old typography and fragments of consumer culture are reworked through paint, distressed surfaces and imperfect textures until they begin to feel less like advertisements and more like memories.
Portraiture remains at the heart of my work. Faces are kept recognisable and emotionally present while the surrounding surface is allowed to become freer, more instinctive and expressive. Brushstrokes, drips, scratches, fragments of colour and unfinished areas become part of the story of the painting.
My influences move between fine art, photography, cinema, fashion, music, old advertising and street culture. Rather than following a single visual language, I allow each piece to develop through experimentation while maintaining the emotional and painterly qualities that connect the work as a whole.
Stefano Gallery brings together original paintings, works on paper and selected commissioned pieces.
Each artwork is created individually in the studio and carries the marks, layers and imperfections of the process that made it.
